Cooling off in Coorg
Varun Parikh
Place of visit: Sunticoppa, 15-minute drive from Coorg town centre.
With long days at work, life in Bangalore was getting too routine. I needed a break! And the gang wanted to go somewhere. So, as usual Sunticoppa beckoned. The thrill of going back to Coorg pumped up our adrenaline.

With long days at work, life in Bangalore was getting too routine. I needed a break! And the gang wanted to go somewhere. So, as usual Sunticoppa beckoned. The thrill of going back to Coorg pumped up our adrenaline.

We set off from Bangalore on Thursday night. The five-hour drive was good, but the roads were not. We hurtled along still, having a blast and quite thrilled to be on our way. The only good stretch was the new Bangalore –Mysore Highway that is coming up. We reach Coorg around 2 am crashed out at our friend’s estate. Knocked out!

The drive had tired us out. All we did the next day was chill out. A bit of football, a bit of cricket, plenty of drinks! Night brought a beautiful sky of stars and a blanket of fireflies. Such nights don’t make you want to come back to the city!

On Saturday, we took off to a place 50 km away from the estate by car (an hour’s drive). Along the way came a small waterfall. We had quite a time playing in the water till we noticed leeches! The small things grew bigger the more they sucked at our blood! We used matches to burn them off but some were not so dexterously done and so we had a few bleeders in the group!

Back at the estate, we had our siestas and were ready for a long evening drive. Ten of us crammed ourselves into a Scorpio for an alright drive. But I wanted more. So we bade goodnight to half of the gang at the estate and went on our second drive. That’s when things turned disastrous. The big bad Scorpio that my friend boasted could take on any Indian road got stuck in a swampy patch. And we couldn’t contact the estate as we—all five of us—had left our phones behind. With no one in sight we had no other option but spend the night in the car.

With dawn came a tractor. Our saviour. Unstuck, we headed back to the estate and heard a bit of an earful from worried friends. But then jokes flew, and before we could settle down, it was time to head back to the city. To the regular grind.

What to look out for in Sunticoppa
Beautiful starry nights, tons of fireflies, lots of time to relax, adventure (if you want it), good food, and great scenery. No wonder Sunticoppa has us coming back for the past five years!

Recommendations
Locals are very friendly. Ask them where to go. They will give you directions to all the nice spots.
The town has all ATMs of all major banks.
Best mode of transport: Own vehicle/rented taxis.
