It’s better to travel well than to arrive.’ This is one of the countless teachings of Gautama Buddha and it practically defines my entire lifestyle. Everything you need to know about me lies in those eight words. I guess it’s true for all honest travel aficionados in the world. Buddha made the statement thousands of years ago because he was also an avid traveller like us. In fact, he was one step ahead as he did it all on foot.

By the way, I chose to begin this post with one of Buddha’s quotes because I am about to share my experience of the Buddha Jayanti (birth anniversary) celebrations. And history says that he attained enlightenment and nirvana on the same day as his birthday. Therefore, this day also marks the death anniversary of Buddha. I had the opportunity of celebrating this festival in Sarnath, one of the four main Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world.

Sarnath is believed to be the site of the deer park where Buddha started teaching the five ascetics who were his first disciples. And, believe me, even after thousands of years the magic still lingers in the very air of Sarnath. On my first visit, I found the village so peaceful that I understood why anyone would want to choose this site for meditation and contemplation.

Sarnath is a small village in the state of Uttar Pradesh, located at a distance of 13 km from the holy city of Varanasi. There isn’t much to see in the village but during the festival, there are prayer meets, sermons on the life of Gautama Buddha, religious discourses and a procession in which the relics are carried out for public display. The village also holds a large fair. The most prominent Buddhist structure in the village is the Dhamekha Stupa. It was built by emperor Ashoka to mark the exact spot where Lord Buddha taught his first disciples. Other structures of note include the Chaukhandi Stupa, where Buddha first met the ascetics, Mulagandhakuti Vihara, Ashoka pillar (only the base remains) and the Sarnath Archaeological Museum which houses some interesting artefacts including the Lion Capital of Ashoka, the national emblem of India.

That’s all there is for a tourist. But if you are looking for a little peace and quiet, Sarnath offers suitable accommodation. For a regular visit, you could just stay in Varanasi and visit Sarnath for a day. But beware; the magic might just rub off on you too. Personally, I think city folks like us badly need the village air to calm our nerves and anxiety.

So here’s Joy, taking your leave and hoping that you discover the magic of Sarnath very soon.

Until next time,
Ciao!

A great picture of the destination often triggers in them the impulse to just pack their bags and get going. This is exactly what happened to me when I came across a picture on the internet a few years ago. It showed a long line of royally decorated elephants in some kind of a ceremony.

Finally a year later, I set foot in the magnificent city of Thrissur in Kerala because the picture that I had seen was taken during the festival of Thrissur Pooram. The festival is celebrated to mark the importance of a Nakshatra (star) named Thrissur Pooram.

Religious ceremonies and festivals are at the heart of Indian culture. The ancient city of Thrissur surrounds the Vadakkumnathan Temple (dedicated to Lord Shiva) which is situated right in the centre of the city on a hillock. It is believed that the 6th incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Lord Parasurama (devotee of Lord Shiva), created the city. It’s no wonder then that this city is called the cultural capital of Kerala.

The city of Thrissur puts its best foot forward during this festival. The festival is essentially a kind of contest between two rival groups. Each group is allowed to bring 15 elephants and a range of fireworks to the festival.

The groups scan the whole of Southern India to secure the best elephants for the celebrations. The elephants are then decorated with colourful parasols and head gear. On the day of the festival, the thundering of percussion instruments fills the air. The finale is a grand display in which elephants stand in one line, leaving the crowds spellbound. Behind them, fireworks dazzle the night sky as the two groups try to outdo each other.

This festival wins my vote hands down for being the most electrifying celebration of a regional festival.

I have already set my sights on the next big travel experience and I am busy browsing through travel magazines to look for some such place. The minute I hit upon it, you’ll be the first one to find out.

Until then,

Ciao!

Of all the regions in India, the one that I have explored the least is the North East. Tucked away in a corner of the eastern Himalayas lies the land of the Nagas or Nagaland. I have harboured quite a fascination for this place since my hostel days when my classmates from Nagaland would tell stories of the warrior tribes that still lived there. I have been able to visit the state only once and that was during the festival of Moatsu.

Moatsu is a spring festival and the tribal Naga people celebrate it with lots of colours, feasts, dance and music. The deeper you move into the countryside, the more authentic the celebrations become. This three-day festival is more than just a celebration of the harvest season. Locals use the occasion to clean their Tsubü or water wells, repair or construct new houses and most importantly, conduct spring weddings. The festivities take on a real jovial mood as the people sing love songs for the newlyweds and tributes to their heroes.

The food is exceptional and free from any kind of city influence. Rice-beer flows all around along with many authentic Naga delicacies. THAT’s how much fun the feasts are!

Nagaland is a small state and all major tourist attractions are relatively close to each other. The entire state is a haven for rich bio-diversity; it’s a dream destination for nature lovers. Even today, there are many places that remain untouched by popular tourism. In case you are feeling truly adventurous, you can experience something truly unique that not many may have even attempted before.

You can start with the Dzukou Valley, 30 km from the capital city of Kohima. It’s the ideal place for trekking and camping as it is surrounded by natural caves, hills and rocks. The stream flowing through the valley helps support hundreds, probably even thousands of species of herbs, plants and flowers that make the valley look spectacular.

It may not be my cup of tea, but if you prefer a more organized experience, visit the Touphema Tourist Village (41 km from Kohima). It’s situated on a hillock with panoramic views. The resort offers all modern comforts in an ethnic setting and also arranges tours to nearby hills, rice fields, hunting trips, cultural expeditions and visits to local homes. They have also recently opened a museum. Kohima is home to the largest crucifix in Asia.

Well, there is a lot more to see. It’s a whole state, you know. But, I’m not going to go on and on about it. This is where I will say good bye. But I’ll be back with yet another destination and a whole new experience. Until then, take care and travel happy.

Ciao!

Joy.

We at Yatra.com have only one thing on our mind all the time and that is how to make your travel happy….Really Happy. We strive to get you the best, cheapest, coolest and easiest deals and travel experience and judging by the response we have had over the years we would certainly like to think that we have done a decent job. But, that kind of continued love and appreciation is certainly not going to become an excuse for us to become complacent and that is why Yatra.com is now finally revealing it’s true ace……the Bollywood heartthrob, the one and only Salman Khan.

And guess what he’ll be up to, now that he has joined forces with us. Got any clue? Well, since we promised to get you the cheapest deals and we mean to stick to our promise, we thought why not get the true Dabangg to be our new face. And, if Sallu’s reputation is anything to go by, we all know damn well that “Ki jab woh ek baar commitment kar dete hain, to phir wo apne aap ki bhi nahi sunte.” So, now that he is onboard you can be sure that he’ll go beyond all boundaries to bring Yatra customers the cheapest deals in town.

We at Yatra are proud to welcome the very spectacular Salman Khan to our family and we hope that all of you will show him the same kind of love that you have shown us over the years.

In thanking you we remain,
