Introduction
Udai Sagar is a beautiful lake, about 13 kilometers (8 miles) east of Udaipur, built by Maharana Udai Singh in the 16th century. Among the five lakes of Udaipur, Udai Sagar extends 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) in length and 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) in width. The lake was actually the result of a dam construction started in 1559 on Berach River. In order to control the swollen lake during rainy seasons, a channel has been made connecting to Berach River. These days the waters of the lake are used in the zinc smelter close to Debari.
It was by the serene waters of this lake that Kunwar Man Singh had invited Maharana Pratap Singh in 1573 to talk about the terms and conditions for surrendering their territory to Mughal Emperor Akbar. This invitation was declined by Rana Pratap and he even humiliated Man Singh, which lead to the battle of Haldighati in 1576. You can spend some time by this shimmering lake whose waters run as deep as Udaipur’s history.
