Introduction

A 10-day long carnival, Taj Mahautsav is a cultural extravaganza that showcases the regions rich culture to visiting tourists. Held in the month of February each year, the festival is organized near the Shilpagram area of the Eastern Gate. The Taj Mahal forms an eye-catching backdrop to the festival where revelers can enjoy local arts, buy regional handicrafts and partake the specialty cuisine of Awadh. Each year, the organizers also invite popular performers for a must-attend cultural event.

India’s finest artisans participate in this event to showcase their talents under one roof. Craftsmen from North East India bring their skills in bamboo and cane work, artisans from Tamil Nadu showcase wood and stone carvings and while those from Kashmir display their exquisitely embroidered shawls and ornate carpets. Other artifacts on display include Banarasi silk saris, hand made carpets from Bhadohi, chikan work from Lucknow and masterpieces from the potters’ wheel in Khurja.

Food stalls serve delicacies from cuisine across the country and internationally acclaimed fine art performances, folk dances and music concerts enliven the entire ambiance. In traditional Mughal style, the festivalcommences with a parade of elephants accompanied by drummers and other musicians.
