Introduction
If you are a pure mountain lover, do not miss this. Plan your trip in a manner that you reach this place around sundown (as most traveling by road from Delhi would). Wake up early next morning and the view of major peaks like Chaukhamba, Panchchuli, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot and Kedarnath among others will leave a lasting impression. Rarely does one get a panoramic view of snow peaks that Binsar offers. This was a favorite of Pandit Nehru, whose family once owned a property here. It has since changed hands, but if you wish to experience a piece of history head for Khali Estate. It offers a few rooms for stay.
Situated 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Almora, Binsar gets its name from a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva called Bineswar. Sitting pretty at an elevation of 2,412 meters (8040 feet) above sea level, it was constructed by King Kalyan of the Chand Dynasty.
Binsar is part of a Bird Sanctuary that houses a fair sprinkling of wild animals. Dense jungles will greet you here. Another interesting activity to look out for here are the various village walks. Done in an organized manner, visitors have options of single day ones as well as walks over days, some going up to seven days and more. Most of them are gentle with community interaction, and stays at comfortable village guest houses.
