Introduction

This octagonal nine-storied structure is a very popular place for the endearing story of a little child named Atal Rai. Born to Guru Hargobind, the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, in 1619 CE, he was said to have been blessed with supernatural powers.

Even as a little child he was intelligent, lively and deeply religious. He was lovingly addressed as 'Baba'. Whatever he said had some profound meaning. Needless to say his parents and friends adored him. But his father would often tell him not to use his gift in a casual manner.

A sarovar or tank built by father Guru Hargobind was Baba and his group’s favorite haunt. In his group was a boy named Mohan. One day Mohan did not show up to play with rest of the group. He had been bitten by a cobra and had died that morning. Unaware of the development, Atal Rai went straight to Mohan’s home. On being told that Mohan had died, Baba Atal Rai refused to believe it. He touched Mohan and said: “Mohan, get up and say Satnam Waheguru.” The dead boy came back to life.

On learning about his son’s deed, Guru Hargobind said, “It has become a habit with Atal to use his spiritual power without thinking about the larger ramifications. Now people will make a beeline. How can he decide who to bring back to life and who not to? We must obey God’s will and not undo what He has done.”

This reprimand from his father had a deep impact on him. That day he took a dip in the sacred sarovar at Harmandir Sahib and went to his favorite haunt. There he recited his prayers. After that, he departed peacefully in 1628 CE. He was all of nine years.

Baba Atal’s body was cremated at the spot where he had renounced it. And a nine-storied Memorial was built. It is the highest point in town and can be seen from afar.

This tower is best known for its beautiful frescoes, all depicting the life of Guru Nanak.
