Introduction
The Jumma Masjid in K R Market is probably the city’s oldest mosque, believed to have been built in 1790. Dedicated to Tipu Sultan, it is an imposing five-storeyed structure that can accommodate up to 10,000 worshippers.
The mosque is said to have been designed by Rayyaz Asifuddin from Hyderabad and the white marble is said to have come from Rajasthan. The architectural features of the mosque include the tall ornamented granite pillars adorning the elevated prayer hall, the balconies embellished with jaali work (latticed screens) and floral motifs.
A few years back, a delicate pattern on the ceilings and walls, previously concealed under successive layers of white paint, made itself visible. These bear the royal mark of Tipu Sultan.
The twin minarets within the masjid stretch up to the spherical domes above the balconies. They have in them a number of pigeonholes, and you can see thousands of birds flying in and out the mosque.
During the festivals, the minars and the mosque are beautifully lit up. Crowds throng the place at such times, especially during the Tipu Urs or the death anniversary of Tipu.
