Introduction
Nrityagram Dance Village, founded by danseuse Protima Gauri, is India's first modern Gurukul (residential school). Situated around 30 kilometer (18.75 miles) from Bangalore in Hesarghatta, it was designed by architect Gerard Da Cunha. “Protima’s dream was a passionate one: I dream of building a community of dancers in a forsaken place amidst nature. A place where nothing exists, except dance. A place where you breathe, eat, sleep, dream, talk, imagine -- dance.”
The dream is played out every day when students from all over the world come here to train in various Indian dance forms. Visitors here get a peek into the life of the students in the lap of nature. There are self as well as guided tours.
Nrityagram is also famous of its Vasantha Habba (festival of spring), held in the first week of February every year. This dusk-to-dawn festival of dance and music is looked on as India’s answer to Woodstock where living legends come together in the name of culture and the arts.
If you are visiting Nrityagram, make it a point to visit Hesarghatta village nearby. The lake offers water sports to the adventurous like boating and wind-surfing. There’s also a dairy and horticulture farm.
