Introduction
Spread across 37.1 acres, Sankey Tank in west Bangalore is a 500-year-old perennial water body. The credit for creating it must go to its architect -- Colonel Richard E Sankey of the Madras Sappers Regiment, former chief engineer of Mysore. Today, it’s a delightful place to unwind, enjoy boating or even swimming in the adjoining clubs.
The Mayura Sankey Boat Club, maintained by KSTDC, is open from 1000 to 1800 hours everyday, and offers rides in different boats -- row boats, pedal boats and motor boats. The charges are Rs 10 for boating and Rs 20 for boating plus a drop to and from the island in the middle of the lake.
Sankey Tank also has a swimming centre which is open from 0600 to 1700 hours on all days with a two hour break between 1000 and 12 noon. It is closed on Fridays. There is a separate batch for women from 1530 to 1630 hours.
While here, remember that this is a litter-free zone and there are dedicated personnel to check littering in and around this area.
