Introduction

Bangaloreans aren’t too proud of the fact that their city that once boasted 400 lakes and tanks now has about 64. That’s probably one reason why they jealously guard Ulsoor Lake that’s located in the heart of the city and provides some scenic moments to joggers, tourists and boating enthusiasts.

The beginnings of Ulsoor Lake can be traced back to the rule of Kempe Gowda who started building lakes since the river Arkavathy was the only closest river. Ulsoor Lake was one of them.

It is said that the area around the Ulsoor Lake was once surrounded by a thick canopy of forest. One day, Kempe Gowda reached there while on a hunt and was so tired that he slept under the same tree where Mandava Rishi is believed to have worshipped God Somesvara. He dreamt of God Somesvara, who told him about a hidden treasure nearby. Kempe Gowda dug up the treasure and used it to build the famous Somesvara pagoda.

Located in Halasuru, or Ulsoor as it is commonly called, near M G Road, it is one of the biggest lakes in the city. It spreads across 126 acres and has several islands strewn in between. The lake as we know it today was developed by Sir Lewin Bentham Bowring.

One of the major attractions at the lake is boating. You can hire rides with stopovers at some of the islands where one can sit and relax. There is also a recreational complex near the lake with a swimming pool. The facility is open from 0900 to 1800 hours, and remains closed on Wednesdays.

Another attraction is Kensington Park, a small garden located towards the northeastern side of the Lake. There’s also a temple dedicated to Subbaraya in the lake area. While at the lake, you could also visit the adjoining gurudwara, considered to be the largest Sikh shrine in the city.

If you happen to be in Bangalore during the Ganesh Chaturthi festival, watch out for the traffic because the Ulsoor Lake is where the immersions take place.
