Introduction

Science comes alive at the Sir Vishvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museum. Even kids who normally nod off during science classes are all eyes and ears here. In fact, that was the objective of the museum when it was established in 1965 as part of the centenary celebrations of the engineer-statesman Sir M. Visvesvaraya, (1861–1962), one of the architects of modern Karnataka: To popularize science and bring it to the common man.

The museum has six themed galleries. The first is the engine hall which displays the evolution of engines. Exhibits are placed behind glass panels, and you can watch them function by pressing the buttons beside them. The predictability and precision of mechanics is demonstrated by balls that roll along on metal tracks without an external power source. Here, you’ll also find a full-scale replica of the 1903 flyer of the Wright brothers, the only museum in the world to have this apart from the Smithsonian Institutions in the US.

The Children’s Science gallery is extremely popular with children and allows them to get up, close with science through live experiments -- like the formation of a tornado, Bernoulli's Principle, Water Motion, Music in Air etc.

The Electro Technic Gallery, as the name suggests, has interactive electrical exhibits which work on the basic principles of electricity, electronics and communication.

The Space Gallery is all about rocket science and space exploration. Biotechnology hall has exhibits on basics of biotechnology and its applications. There’s also a moving replica of a Spinosaurus on the ground floor. 3D films are screened regularly in the 3D theater and the museum also conducts a mini-planetarium show called 'Taramandal' at regular intervals.

In the Popular Science Gallery there is a model of an Egyptian pyramid, timepieces across the ages -- from ancient time pieces, sand hour glasses, a sun dial, and also a very popular model of Jantar Mantar of Delhi. An original model of Morse code and portraits of famous mathematicians can be found in this museum.

The Centre also has two exhibition floors housing a permanent display of all that is manufactured in Karnataka. The museum attracts close to one million visitors a year.
