Introduction
This was the second wildlife reserve of the rulers of Bharatpur. About 50 km to the south of Keoladeo National Park, Bundh Baretha is essentially a reservoir that serves as a wintering ground for migratory waterfowls. The reservoir is the outcome of a dam on Kakund river and is a perennial source of water for birds. An old palace owned by the Bharatpur royal family, near the reservoir, is all there is by way of structures. The lack of human habitation makes it a serene place although a few resorts are coming up. Chestnut bittern, Little cormorant and Purple heron are some of the birds commonly seen here, while prominent animals in adjoining forests include sambhar, chital, blue bull, wild boar, hyena and leopard. Avid birders make it a point to visit Bundh Baretha that also happens to provide water to Bharatpur town.
