Introduction
Spread over 2000 acres of semi-arid land, the National Research Center on Camel (NRCC) at Bikaner, popularly known as the Government Camel Breeding Farm, is an initiative of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Established on 5th July, 1984, it is a unique endeavor that has made a name for itself around the world when it comes to breeding the finest single-humped Indian camels (Camelus dromedaries).
Because of their swift speed, this variant of the ‘ship of the desert’ is much favored by the Indian Army. They are also sold during the various fairs at Bikaner and Jaisalmer, wherein they are rendered resplendent with decorations and ornaments. The Raika or Rebari, the traditional tribe of camel breeders have numerous anecdotes and stories to share about this wondrous creature.
With a view towards transforming camels into a milch animal, and thereby an economically viable option for the camel rearers of the region, NRCC has set up a camel milk dairy within the premises. The thick camel milk is not only delicious but is also a rich source of Vitamin C. Camel hair is used to manufacture blankets, belts, wallets, ropes, carriage bags, etc., while hides are utilized in making toys, drums, mojaris, lamp shades, containers for oil and other items of decoration. The hairs on the chin are used in artists’ brushes.
Tourists can avail of the camel ride and safari facilities arranged by the Center and enjoy seeing the animals in their natural habitat. There is a museum as well within the premises wherein information is available on various aspects pertaining to the development and research on camels.
