Introduction

To the east of Bikaner, merely a 20-minute drive away, lies Devi Kund, a commemorative site dedicated to the Bika dynasty rulers. Here one can find a number of intricately sculpted cenotaphs, or chhatris, each standing on the spot where a particular Bika ruler was cremated.

Crafted in the Rajputana style, the cenotaphs are testament to the grandiosity of the craft and bear the names of the rulers engraved on them. A combination of red sandstone (older cenotaphs) and white marble (newer ones), each of these is an awe-inspiring structure.

However, the one that catches most attention is dedicated to Raja Surat Singh. Built of white marble, the ceilings of the cenotaph are the canvas on which are displayed magnificent frescoes, and Rajput miniature paintings. Royal portraits and stone inscriptions adorn a number of other cenotaphs.

Not only does Devi Kund commemorate the monarchs, but also honor their queens and even the unfortunate still-born children of the royal family. While the cenotaphs marked for the queens bear footprint impressions with henna patterns; those built for children are called ‘Nada’ and are simple canopy-less white cube-like structures. Additionally, there are cenotaphs in the memory of twenty-two ‘Satis’ and one ‘sata’ (male sati).
