Introduction

This three-storied reddish-pink complex is an exquisite example of lattice design, filigree work and carved friezes. A comparatively recent structure, the construction of this magnificent palace began in 1902 as a commissioned project by the British controlled regency for Maharaja Ganga Singh, when the Junagarh Palace was deemed unfit for a king.

Under the able guidance of British architect Col. Samuel Swinton Jacob, it took 24 years to give shape to this fascinating creation that blends the best of European, Rajput and Mughal styles and is known for its Italian colonnades, motifs of lotus in full bloom and intricately carved fire mantles. Impressed with its beauty, Ganga Singh decided to name the palace after his deceased father, Maharaja Lall Singh.

The finished complex consisted of halls, lounges, guest suites, swimming pool, drawing rooms, tea room, gardens, smoking rooms, pavilions, and a dining room that could accommodate 400 people. An interesting feature is the trap and skeet shooting facilities that were specifically built by the monarchs for their visitors’ entertained.

Today, the descendants of the Maharajas occupy just one portion of the palace, while the rest has been converted into a luxury hotel. The gardens have been impeccably maintained to this day. The Shri Sadul Museum, located at the west wing on the ground floor has a number of photographs of the royal family on display; besides a formidable collection of the monarchs’ personal belongings, statues, coins and a variety of miniature items made of sandalwood. Also located within the premises is the Anup Sanskrit Library, which, with its vast repository of original manuscripts and engravings has the distinction of being the world’s fourth largest private library.
