Introduction
One of the most beautiful and oldest temples of the region, the Laxmi Nath temple's origins dates back to the days when the foundation of the city was laid by Rao Bikaji. Later, under the guidance of Maharaja Rao Lunkaran, majority of the construction was completed between 1504 and 1526, with further embellishments being rendered during the reign of Maharaja Ganga Singh. A combination of white marble and red stone, the king imported from Jaisalmer, the temple bears testimony to the architectural and sculptural skills of the artisans.
A shrine of Lord Laxmi Nath, or Vishnu, whom the monarchs of Bikaner consider to be the true king of the land, the inner sanctorum has on display a 1.5 feet tall idol of the Lord locked in an embrace with his wife, Goddess Lakshmi, atop a stone platform. Constructed in sync with the traditional religious Vaishnava style, the temple comprises a verandah, kitchen (rasoi), circumambulatory paths (parikrama) and portico (sabhakaksha). There is a steady stream of devotees throughout the year, with the number increasing substantially during certain fairs organized within the temple premises, which include those during Janmashtami, Nirjala Ekadashi, Ramnavami, Deepawali, Kartik Ekadashi and Bhagvad Gita Jayanti.
