Introduction
Chandigarh, also called the City Beautiful, prides itself in its architecture and people. The three-day long Chandigarh Carnival held in November of each year is a celebration of the city as a whole. A colorful fiesta organized by the city administration, the Carnival witnesses enthusiastic participation from residents, especially children and senior citizens as well as from surrounding suburbs. Thousands of people participate in the parades and many contests that make up the Carnival Calendar.
Organized in Leisure Valley, Sector 10, the Carnival starts off with a mega parade. Participants and enthusiastic onlookers gather together for a colorful procession, dancing and singing along to popular folk tunes. Over the next three days, several age-specific contests are organized, such as painting, fancy dress, talents shows, clay modeling, and cartooning. Some of these events are especially popular with senior citizens of the city, who have always shown enthusiastic support for the event.
The city administration has taken a number of steps to make the event accessible for the residents. Easy and affordable accommodation is provided at the venue as well as pick-up and drop facilities. Each year, the festival has a theme and most events are organized on that.
The Carnival is a fascinating display of Chandigarh’s vibrant culture and civic pride. Residents support each event enthusiastically and often quite vocal in their appreciation. The epitome of fun and frolic, the Chandigarh festival aims to bring together people from various parts of Chandigarh and other nearby areas.
