Introduction
The mango is undoubtedly the king of fruits. And as fitting tribute, the beautiful city of Chandigarh hosts and annual festival in its honor. Organized in the month of June, when almost all parts of India are submerged in the intoxicating aroma of mangoes, this festival is an important platform for agriculturalists to showcase the product and common visitors to appreciate a fruit they so love.
Traditionally the festival is held at the Pinjore Gardens, some 20-odd kilometers outside the city. But that does not dampen the enthusiasm of participants. Planters, agricultural universities, traders and every day fruit eater converge at the venue all through June to admire the many varieties of mangoes on display.
Some popular varieties that visitors to the fair can hope to sample are Alphonso, Kesar, Langra, Dashehri, Gulabkhas, Badami, Mallika, Sindhu, and Banganpalli, as well as many other locally produced hybrids. While at the fair, you can also sample freshly squeezed mango juice, jams, pickles, chutneys, and other condiments. Besides the mango producers and academics, everyday confectioners also showcase their delightful mango preparations.
