Introduction
Located at the popular Capitol Complex in Sector 1, the distinctive Open Hand Monument is one of the significant and most visited landmarks in the city. Designed by Le Corbusier, the monument symbolizes the spirit of the city. Situated amidst the three most important buildings of local administration: Secretariat, High Court and Legislative Assembly. The architecture of the entire Capitol Complex is impressive, an ideal setting for this grand monument that is also the emblem of the city.
Built of metal and coated with baked enamel in the colors of the Indian tricolor - saffron, white and green, the Open Hand is designed like a weathervane. Rising 14 meters above the ground and weighing an equally impressive 50 kgs, the monument symbolizes peace among humanity. Le Corbusier hoped the monument would convey an openness to ideas, a value which he hoped would be intrinsic to the beautiful city he designed.
These giant’s hand gently rotates on its axis, like a weathervane, but unlike the direction of wind, this structure moves on the basis of ideas and ideology.
The Monument is an important venue for public gatherings, especially for public debates and even demonstrations. Located away from the main entrance of the Capital Complex, there is no entrance fee to visit.
