Introduction
Sitavani is a small area under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) with a forest rest house and an ancient shrine dedicated to Goddess Sita from the great Indian epic, Ramayana. Legend has it that Sita spent her days in exile here, raised her kids, Luv and Kush, and was swallowed by the earth during ‘Agnipariksha’. This little temple is shrouded by a dense jungle of sal and mixed vegetation, and attracts in hoards those who are religiously inclined including ardent birding enthusiasts. Some rare and exotic avian species have been sighted by tourists around this place, especially near the desolate temple pond tucked away amid copious greenery. The crisscrossing rivulets and vast open grasslands only heighten the dramatic beauty of the landscape.
A part of the buffer zone, the jungle of Sitavani is host to an array of wildlife such as panther, tiger, elephant, deer, sambar, barking deer, wild elephant, porcupine, and king cobra among others. An ancient Valmiki temple is also located here. A trip to Sitavani will be full of photo opportunities. You do not require any special permit to venture inside. This part of the forest is known for its population of tigers, and wild elephants that move about in herds at the water’s edge.
Villagers at Sitavani often complain about the tigers and elephants that frequent Kosi River for a drink, and crossover to the other side to ransack crops, and pick domestic animals that stray away from the main village.
