Introduction
About 9 kilometers (6 miles) from the south of Bicholim town is one of Goa’s most striking natural wonders, Arvalem Waterfall. When you emerge out of the Rudreshwar temple and descend down the stairs, you will be faced with a 24-feet-high (7.2 meters) waterfall that roars down onto a huge lake. The emerald water of the lake entices you to take a refreshing dip. Take back some memorable photographs of the majestic waterfall shedding its silvery showers all year long. Stroll around the area, soak up the verdant greenery and explore the majestic falls from different perspectives.
The surrounding ancient Arvalem caves add a touch of antiqueness to this place of exquisite beauty. Interestingly, lot of Indian filmmakers have also patronized this place. The best time to visit the falls is immediately after monsoon when it is fully rapturous. It opens up a euphoric, ravishing and violent visionary vista that leaves every visitor enthralled. You can spend some time at the government-built park, enjoying the scenery and soaking up the authentic atmosphere. Arvalem Waterfall opens up Goa from a different perspective and adds a kind of serenity to its atmosphere.
A short drive from the regional town of Bicholim, along the road from Mayem Lake, brings you to the pretty village of Sanquelim. This is the place where the colonial government settled its Rajput mercenaries in the mid-1700s and where the same mercenaries staged their successful uprisings during the 19th century. Sanquelim village can be easily reached by bus from Mapusa (about 2 hours), but you will have to walk for about half an hour or take a motorbike taxi to get to the caves or the waterfall.
