Introduction
Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary originally known as Molem Game Sanctuary is the oldest in Goa situated in Sanguem taluka. Spread out over 240 square kilometers, the sanctuary is also the biggest in Goa. Collem railway station falls within the sanctuary and one can reach the place in a train from Margao or Vasco. Nestled at the foothills of Sahyadri Range, the dense forest found here extends to Maharashtra and Karnataka as well. The park is a paradise for avid birdwatchers, being home to some exotic species of birds. Jeep safari is the best way to explore the sanctuary and spot wildlife. You can hire a jeep after completing the formalities at the office of the forest authority.
Set out on a wildlife safari and keep your binoculars handy. The park is an abode of wild animals such as leopards, jungle cats, spotted deer, Malayan Giant Squirrels, cobras, pythons and a wealth of reptiles. Among birds, some commonly spotted ones include Indian Black Woodpecker, Paradise Fly Catcher, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Fairy Blue Bird, emerald dove, kingfishers, Drongo, Barbets, Wag tails and the Great Indian Hornbill.
To get a feel of life in the wilderness, you can stay here for a couple of nights. Experience the thrill of game spotting as you take early morning and late evening safaris and watch the wild animals from close quarters as they go through their daily routine. The sanctuary offers cozy cottages and dormitories built by the Department of Tourism; you are advised to book in advance if planning an overnight stay during a weekend or public holiday.
In addition to a diversity of flora, fauna and avifauna, the sanctuary also has some important historical and geological features. One such natural wonder is Dudhsagar Falls, which is about an hour from Colem via train. Most tourists prefer Devil’s Canyon Viewpoint to view wild animals, and also for its breathtaking scenery. Another popular attraction is the temple of Tambdi Surla of the Kadamba kings, located about 13 kilometers (8 miles) from Molem. This quaint 13th century temple is made of basalt lava rock dedicated to Lord Shiva.
To gain vehicular access to the main park, you need permission from Range Forest Officer whom you can meet at Nature Education Centre which is some 100 meters from the sanctuary. It is easy to reach the park as it is in the route of NH 4A, the national highway connecting Ponda to Belgaum. Regular train service is also available from Ponda to Molem.
