Introduction
About 22 kilometers (13.75 miles) from Panaji on Verna plateau, just off the Panaji-Margao highway, is one of the most exotic water bodies in the beach state of Goa. Set against tropical woodlands and swaying betel palms, the therapeutic mineral water of Kesarval Spring emerges from hard and compact rocks. The spring essentially comes to life during monsoons, and looks wonderful brimming with sparkling water. Summers, however, detract from the beauty of the natural spring as its stream becomes thin and its grace recedes due to dryness in the air. Take back some memorable pictures of the verdant wilderness, the crystal-clear water of the spring gushing through weather-beaten rocks, and above its gorge the hills stretching out in the east and south.
The spring is named after ‘Kesarval’ (meaning eagles) that had a huge colony here among the wooded slopes. Since a stony zigzag track was the only route to reach the spring, a staircase was built in the 1950s below the hill for travelers. The spring is very popular with the locals who come here to bathe in its waters, believed to have healing powers. The medicinal properties of the water make Kesarval a great spa where travelers both from faraway places and locals bathe with a belief that the water will heal their ailments.
After a rejuvenating shower, picnic by its banks amid the stunning scenery of rolling terraced hills tumbling down to the wooded countryside, where time stands still. If you wish to spend the night here, there are accommodation options in the area nearby, none however at Kesarval.
There is a decent bus service from Mapusa and Panaji to Kesarval, with the interstate bus station at Margao, the KTC bus station. You can also reach the spring by taking the national highway leading to Margao. To arrive at the site, you have to cross the bridge straddling Zuari River and pass through the pretty village of Cortalim.
