Introduction

While Jantar Mantar is the original attraction for astronomy enthusiasts in Jaipur, The Birla Planetarium is a modern and as interesting activity. One of the many such centers built by one of India’s premier industrialists, the Birla Planetarium is very popular with school children and tourists in Jaipur. The planetarium conducts sky shows and other audiovisual education programs that educate young visitors on the many wonders of the universe.

A part of the Birla Institute of Scientific Research, a premier research institute established by the Birlas, the planetarium promotes science as a discipline amongst youngsters. Of course, with its regular sky shows, the focus is mainly on astronomy.

The sky shows are immensely enjoyable. A typical show will talk about the solar system, the planets, especially those nearer to Earth , the Milky Way, and of course the sun. All of this is accompanied with a vivid visual recreation of the night sky and even the surface of the planets. One of the recent shows conducted by the planetarium took the audience through a 40,000 kilometer journey around the earth with stopovers at the Artic and Antartic zones. This particular show also highlighted the many views of the night sky.

Other features of the planetarium include a sky dome 12 meters in diameter, modern computerized projection system and an exhibition gallery, and working models to illustrate the workings of the universe.

The BM Birla Planetarium is a popular attraction with children and adults alike, especially at the time of special events such as eclipses, meteor showers, and comets.
