Introduction
Sited at the base of the Moti Dungri Fort, the white façade and dome of the Laxmi Narayan Temple stand out amidst Jaipur’s historic skyline. This relatively modern temple was built in mid 1900s by the Birlas, one of India’s leading industrial houses. It is also known as the Birla Temple.
The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, also known as Narayan and his consort Goddess Laxmi. But many other Hindu deities as well as philosophers such as Socrates and Confucius, and prophets like Zarathustra, Buddha, and Jesus are also well represented.
A popular prayer ground, the temple of also notable for its fine marble architecture and intricate carvings. The complete exterior of the temple is covered with detailed marble carvings that depict scenes from Hindu mythology. The stained glass windows of the main shrine too follow the same theme.
The many sculptors of the temples are much admired by worshipers and art connoisseurs alike. The temple’s sculptors represent almost all major religions, a uniquely secular approach to religion. The main shrine houses idols of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi, which are carved out of a single block of marble. The idol of Lord Ganesha too is remarkable, it seems to be made of translucent marble.
