Introduction
The Rajput king, Maharaja Jai Singh II initiated the construction of Ram Niwas Bagh in 1868. The project was designed to offer employment to a populace in the grip of a grim famine. Today, the Ram Niwas Bagh is one of the few gardens in Jaipur and offers welcome relief from the desert sun, and the enchanting if a tad monotonous beauty of the city. Its lush green lawns and multi-hued flowers enliven the Jaipur landscape.
At the center of Ram Niwas Bagh stands the Albert Hall Museum. Built in the Indo-Gothic style, the museum has several fine collections from Rajasthan’s rich cultural heritage. The Jaipur Zoo is also a part of the Ram Niwas Bagh complex. The oldest zoo of Jaipur, it is home to over 70 different species such as lion, tiger, panthers, leopards, spotted and barking deer, alligators and crocodiles. There is also an aviary, which is home to white peacocks, pelicans, painted stork, pheasants and many other species of native and migratory birds.
In the evenings, the gardens come alive with the melodious tunes of a music recital. Other attractions within the complex include a herbarium. The sprawling grounds of Ram Niwas Bagh and its many cafes and attractions are popular with tourists and locals alike. A garden is ideal for family visits or just to remind one’s self of Jaipur’s greener side.
