Introduction

This is the brain child of Mr. N.K.Sharma bestowed with the National Teacher’s award, and the author of the book Jaisalmer The Golden City. Set up in 1984, the folklore museum has steadily grown in stature. It is an excellent place for those interested in understanding the finer cultural aspects of the region. For example, the significance of colors and designs of headgear and costume are key pointers of an individual's status in the traditional society. The museum helps a visitor get an insight into such finer aspects! Puppets and other traditional items of daily use are on display here. Located near the entrance of Gadisar Lake, one can watch a video showing musicians playing traditional instruments, and detailing other traditional skills in English, French and Hindi. Also recommended is the depiction of the tragic love story of Princess Moomal and King Mahendra.

Archival photographs, paintings, coins, fossils, camel ornaments, musical instruments, old manuscripts can be seen at the nearby Desert Culture Centre and Museum. This one came up much later in 1997 and is located at Gadisar Circle, across the road from the Folklore Museum. Both the museums are run by the same management, and ticket bought at either museum is valid for both.
