Introduction
Camel, they say, is the ship of the desert. So a trip to a desert destination is pretty much incomplete if one hasn’t experienced a camel safari. And there’s no better place to experience this than Sam. Located 42 km west of Jaisalmer, Sam is a tiny village with beautiful shifting sand dunes. Most visitors find the ever changing sand dunes truly alluring. During season (Nov-Mar) folk dancers add a distinct flavor to the place. And a wide variety of camp sites offer stay options as well.
Sam sand dunes have become a tourist hot spot over a period of time. Its 3 km (length) by 1 km (width) dimension of shifting sand dunes is the largest in the vicinity. The scenic beauty of the place reaches a crescendo around sunset. Most visitors reach Sam by 1600 hours during winter to take the sunset safari. It is usually a 2-3 hour affair costing anywhere between Rs 100 to 300. It is a lovely experience. Regular bus services connect Sam to Jaisalmer.
A long desert safari would mean going deep into the Great Thar Desert for a few days. People who operate these safaris provide porters, cooks and guides. Often tourists opt to drive out of town in a car/jeep, and meet the safari operators at an appointed place (temple/village). Great desert views, sleeping by the dunes and under the stars can make for an unforgettable experience. It also gives you a great opportunity to experience the hard life in the desert. Going into the endless desert is a romantic notion but a long camel ride isn't to be taken lightly. It can leave you with a sore back and aching legs. Therefore before negotiating on a long safari, try a few short rides like the ones at Sam.
