Introduction

For a place with an average annual rainfall of around 5 inches, the importance of a water tank can never be marginal. Gadisar, is thus, an important place in Jaisalmer. A man-made tank, it was built in the 14th century by Rawal Gadsi Singh with the idea of harnessing precious rainwater in this arid region. In recent years, with the Indira Gandhi Canal supplying water, the volume of water throughout the year is impressive. Small wonder, it is a popular picnic destination in the region. Domed pavilions and religious shrines dot its banks. A few pavilions within the water body lend it a quaint beauty. One can hire a boat to reach them.

There is an interesting tale around the beautiful gateway to the lake. It was built by a royal courtesan named Tillon towards the end of 19th century. Known as Tillon Ki Prol (Gate of Tillon), a statue of Lord Vishnu was installed in the year 1908 CE on the gate by the courtesan and declared a Krishna Temple to save it from demolition, by the then Maharawal.

Migratory birds can also be spotted here. Its relative proximity to Bharatpur and the Rann of Kutch makes this well placed for birds flying in from the north. Arm yourself with binoculars and SLR cameras and lens for a more worthwhile experience.

Gadisar is a lovely place to steal a quiet moment. Reflect on your travels, watch the desert wind create ripples, soak in the beauty of an oasis in the desert...
