Introduction

One of the highlights of the fort is the group of seven interconnected Jain temples. Intricately carved pillars catch the eye first up, as the temples come into the visual frame of a visitor while meandering through the narrow lanes of the fort. As one steps into the temple complex built in the 15th and 16th centuries, the delicate craftsmanship of its sculptures grows in prominence. The soft, warm stone lends itself perfectly to sculptures. But as one goes further into the complex the lack of space becomes evident, also certain sections are pretty dark, especially in Sambhavanath Temple. Visit the temples when there aren't too many people around to appreciate their beauty. The main temple is dedicated to the 22nd Tirthankara – Parsvanath. One enters the temple through a beautifully carved toran (gateway) with brightly painted ceiling. The main idol within the sanctum sanctorum is said to have been brought here from Lodhurva, the earlier capital of the Bhatti Rajputs of Jaisalmer.

Next in line is the Chandraprabhu Temple dedicated to the eighth Tirthankara. Look out for the Rishabhadeva Temple, in particular, for its beautiful apsara (danseuse) sculptures. Also check out the Gyan Bhandar - a tiny 16th century library housing a number of ancient manuscripts. Many of them date back to the 11th century. This can be approached through Sambhavanath Temple.

The Shitalnath Temple, dedicated to the 10th tirthankar, houses an eight-metal image. While the last two temples - Shantinath and Kunthanath – built in 1536 are adorned with plenty of sensual carvings.

No leather is allowed within the temple, and menstruating women are restricted from entering.
