Introduction
Tazia Tower stands out as a distinct piece of architecture in Jaisalmer building landscape. Situated in the Badal Palace complex located near Amar Sagar Gate, the complex is home of the former royal family. The Tazia Tower finds a prominent place in the complex. It is a five-storey structure where each floor has its own distinct design style, especially the balconies. Muslim craftsmen built it in the shape of a Tazia and gifted to their royal patron. Tazias are ornately decorated bamboo, paper and tinsel replicas of a bier carried in procession during Muharram. The idea behind the design was conceived by a well-known master craftsman of the region, Gajdhar Hothi, who later moved to Pakistan after the Partition in 1947. It is one of the best specimens of Muslim architecture in Rajasthan.
