Introduction
One of the most charming aspects of Jodhpur is strolling through its lively bazaars. Being the trade hub of the desert region, its bazaars overflow with a variety of ethnic delights. The stretch around Clock Tower and Kunj Bihari Temple is particularly interesting, especially for women. As one turns left from Nai Sadak, one enters Lakhara Bazaar. The sight of colorful lac bangles in ethnic and contemporary designs is at once inviting.
Lac is a resinous secretion of plant sucking insects. Deposited on branches of the host trees, these are harvested as stick lac, which is then crushed, sieved and washed several times to remove impurities.
Lac bangles of the region are produced in eye-catching colors. Most of these bangles come in primary colors – red, blue, green, yellow – which can be coordinated with both Indian and western wear. Local designs here add mirror and glass to the bangles. From teenage girls to middle-aged ladies, Lakhara Bazaar has a draw for them all. A walk through this bazaar is also recommended for those with an eye for colors, patterns and textures of an age-old local craft.
