Introduction
About 32 kilometers (20 miles) from Kanyakumari, Muttom Beach is quite popular with sunset watchers. On arriving into this area you will be faced with a 100-year-old lighthouse from the British era standing sentinel (105-foot/31.5 meters) over a rough sea. Trek further down through the rock tops and take in views of an endless sea with giant white waves crashing against dark rocks speckled on the beachfront (some dipping into the sea). Until a few years ago, the beach though a great sunset view point was not safe enough owing to the slippery rocks, strong undercurrents and thundering waves.
To avert accidents, the government has fenced off the more dangerous portion of the rocks. Today, the beach looks tastefully landscaped with small open huts at various levels on the rock heads for you to sit and enjoy the waves and soak in a spectacular sunset. There are a few sitting benches laid in a circle – a spot mostly occupied by elderly folks who after an evening walk stop by to catch their breath and watch the sun sink into the sea. On weekends the beach sees locals coming in with their families for a picnic. Go on a weekday if you seek solitude and wish to capture in your lens the unspoilt nature of Muttom.
Truly an ideal place to stretch back, reflect on your travels and even fill up your diary.
