Introduction
When the ‘Gurkha Wars’ came to an end in 1815-16, Subathu grew steadily in importance. This was where the newly appointed British Political Agent to the Hill States was initially based and this was a major stopover on the old road to Shimla; the ‘old road’ rose from Kalka straight up to Kasauli, went past the Lawrence School at Sanawar and dropped down to Subathu via Dharampur, this then went past the villages of Sairi and Kakkarhatti to reach Shimla. Subathu, right from the early years, was a major recruitment center for Gurkhas in the British Indian army. This is now the Regimental Center of the Indian army for Gurkhas. At an altitude of some 4,500 feet and 27 kms from Kasauli, Subathu is surrounded by scrub and bamboo forests and a few pines and huge eucalyptus trees. This little army town is quite spotless and its dressed-stone buildings are well maintained. One of the more remarkable structures in Subathu is the old ‘viceregal lodge’ designed in 1880 which was used by the Governors-General when they passed through the station. The old cemetery is also well worth a visit.
About 20 kms from Subathu, the erstwhile princely state of Kuthar lies near the cantonment of Subathu above the banks of the Gambar stream. Tradition has it that the state was established an adventurer from Kishtwar ( near Jammu ), by the name of Surat Chand. At the end of the ‘Gurkha Wars’ the victorious British restored the state to the Rana on 3 September 1815 at an annual tribute of Rs. 1000/- The area of this State was nineteen square miles. The oldest section of the palace, which is the main structure in the area, is regarded to be over 800 years old. Some sections are in a dilapidated condition but the frescoes on the walls are noteworthy.
