Introduction

Located 11 kilometers (6.8 miles) from Katra, on the Katra-Resai road is the idyllic Baba Dhansar Mandir. A small temple, it is about a kilometer’s walk from the main highway, a trip that is well rewarded by the beautiful view of cool water gushing down from the mountains before it settles into a tranquil pond. The quaint temple and the scenic natural surroundings combine to offer spiritual peace and calm amidst idyllic hills.

Like much of the area, the legend of this temple too begins with Lord Shiva. While on his way to Amarnath to inform his wife Parvati of hi immortality, Lord Shiva asked the serpent god, Sheshnag to stay behind and protect the people of the area. Sheshnag took human form and settled here, fathering many sons; one of whom was Dansar. An ascetic saint, Baba Dansar was revered by the locals. When demons attacked the area, the people called on Baba Dansar for his help. At this time, Lord Shiva returned and helped slay the demon.

As a token of gratitude the present temple was built at that very spot - adjacent to a naturally formed Shivaling and near the Karua jheel, once the lair of a vengeful demon. The waterfall and the pond are now regarded with special religious fervor, and bathing in the jheel or waterfall is not permitted. However, you can go a little downstream to take a dip and cleanse yourself and offer prayers.
