Introduction
Kardang is at a distance of five kilometres from Keylong and is clearly visible from most parts of the little town. This has a historic monastery that lies above the tiny village (also named Kargang) and is located across the river Bhaga. With a backdrop of bare mountains, the 'gompa', Buddhist monastery is believed to date back to the twelfth century and is one of the most revered places of the Drug-pa (Red Hat ) sect of Vajrayana Buddhism. The monastery has a large library of the sacred Kangyur and Tangyur texts – and is also the repository of some exquisite thangka paintings which have been executed according to the strictest iconographical codes and strictures. In addition, the monastery has several old musical instruments like drums, trumpets and cymbals which are used in the ritual dances and chants. There are numerous old weapons too - and it may be added that many of these far-flung monasteries were also compelled to serve as forts and have a defensive character as they were the repositories of a fair amount of the wealth and were targets for invaders as well as looters. For a long time the monastery of Kardang was in a state of disrepair till it was revitalised by Lama Norbu in 1912 – and the enormous dedication and efforts on part of the abbot prevented major sections from crumbling and its art treasures being vandalised or neglected. At Kardang, today, there are dozens of resident monks and nuns – and many more who are there for short periods. Several monks are believed to have undertaken marathon meditations – with the sessions lasting for the traditional period of three years, three months and three days. The village of Kardang was once the ‘capital’ of Lahaul till this was shifted to Keylong.
