Introduction
Every year from 25th Febraury to 2nd March the cultural capital of the Chandela Kings becomes the hub of one of the country's most prestigious dance festivals. Culture and art connoisseurs from across the globe descend on to this tiny cluster of villages that make up Khajuraho. Held in the Western Group of Temples, the festival draws the best classical dancers from across the country who perform against the beautiful backdrop of the floodlit temples. This synthesis of the past and the present gets their creative juices flowing to create a heady atmosphere.
As dusk falls, the temples are lit up in a soft, dream-like ethereal stage. The open-air auditorium in front of the Chitragupta Temple dedicated to the Sun God and the Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva form the venues. Connoisseurs block their dates to witness a kaleidoscopic display of India's finest dance forms in one festival. The intricate footwork of Kathak, the invigorating rhythm and abhinaya (expression) of Bharathanatyam, the lyrical Odissi, the strong footwork and mudras (hand gestures) of Kuchipudi and the dainty movements of Manipuri, the Kathakali dance dramas with their elaborate face paintings are all brought alive by the finest exponents of their respective dance forms. The artists performing here are honored for their performances.
The basic idea behind Khajuraho Dance Festival is to make the current generation aware of the rich cultural heritage of the country.
