Introduction

Comprising three temples that stand fairly apart from one another, the Southern Group of temples do not have the sculptural exuberance of the other groups. The most prominent of these is the Duladeva temple with Shiva as the presiding deity. Built in the twelfth century, it bears testimony to the decline of temple architecture in the late Chandela period. Even so the main hall contains some exquisite carving.

The tall Chaturbhuj temple's shikhara is visible from a distance above the surrounding treeline. Built prior to Duladeva in 1100 AD, it bears a distinct resemblance to the Javari temple of the Eastern Group. Dedicated to Vishnu, it is, however, totally devoid of Khajuraho's signature theme - erotica. An outstanding 3 meter (9 feet) high image of Vishnu graces its inner sanctum. Visit both these temples post noon when sunlight beams into the sanctum sanctorum.

Bija Math, the third temple or more accurately ruins, is a little beyond Chaturbhuj temple. Buried under mud until 1998, it is very much work-in-progress. ASI has been excavating it and one can see archaeologists at work. A delicately carved platform has already been unearthed. The temple by itself has disintegrated into the debris of beautiful sculptures lying all around the site. It is an enriching experience to see the ruins being put together piece by piece with such painstaking diligence.
