Introduction
One of the smaller islands in Kochi, Bolghatty’s romantic appeal draws many honeymooners. At the heart of Bolghatty is the palace built by the Dutch in 1744. This is the oldest Dutch Palace outside of Netherlands. Its high ceiling interiors, slanting tile roof and sprawling greens all around lend the place a unique charm.
After the British took over, it became the residence of an influential Englishman. The property as it stands today has been transformed into a hotel by Kerala Tourism Development Corporation. A golf course and water facing cottages have been added to the property. Lush green lawns and trees planted all around add to the picturesque setting.
Although Bolghatty Island is connected to Ernakulam (mainland) by a bridge, we’d recommend a leisurely ferry ride. There are regular ferry services from Ernakulam and Fort Kochi. It sets the tone for a visit to this scenic island. After strolling around the property and taking in the sights, settle down for a cup of tea at the hotel’s outdoor café.
