Introduction
Picture a family of bears meeting at a watering hole to quench their thirst. That’s what the early inhabitants of Kodaikanal got to see at this waterfall thus christening it the ‘Bear Shola’ Falls. This scenic picnic spot, situated a little outside the main town is actually a remnant of water overflowing from Kodai Lake. During the summer months, the water just trickles down over the rocks, but if you happen to visit during or just after the monsoon, expect to see a buoyant gush of misty water.
Though a little outside the main town, Bear Shola Falls is still the nearest picnic spot. You can hire a bicycle, pack a wholesome picnic basket with marshmallows, jelly sandwiches and lots of homemade chocolates (all of which Kodai is famous for) and cruise the 1.6 kilometer (0.9 mile) track. Given its proximity to the city, the falls are well under the span of cell phone towers and tuck-shops selling delicious goodies.
Getting to Bear Shola Falls is fairly simple: go past the Kodai Lake and the telephone exchange and then turn right at the junction. You can see the road sashay down to the waterfalls. There are many diminutive water streams around here that are overflows of rivers, lakes or rainwater, creating a picturesque landscape. The fresh, thick air and calmness of the milieu is indeed a treat.
