Introduction
A beautiful lake situated some 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) from the town’s center. It is one of the most scenic spots in the vicinity of Kodaikanal. Nestled between green rolling hills, its water is clear and pristine. The site was originally a swamp, however a paleontological study of the lake’s sediment deposits has revealed a history that is more than 10,000 years old. Now, however, the lake is part of a water development project and provides drinking water to the surrounding towns, as the water in this lake is known for its purity and clarity.
Along with the scenic vistas of the hills, the lake is also an important conservation center for local flora and fauna. Animal sightings are fairly common, as several bisons, langurs, elephants and leopards come for the lake for a drink of water. Birds such as serpent eagles, pariah kites, rosefinch, leaf-warblers and pale rumped swallows can be spotted here, as can bisons, langurs, elephants and an occasional leopard. However, this lake is protected by forest laws and is not open to the general public. You have to take prior permission from the District Forest Officer to visit, and especially to go boating in the lake.
While the presence of a swamp in the region has been established, the lake itself is a fairly new attraction. In 1864, Colonel Hamilton an officer in the British army selected the site for a military cantonment, which was built and the eponymous Fort Hamilton established. The lake itself was artificially created three years later.
This is one of the most popular picnic spots in the area. And a pleasant picnic can be wrapped up with a relaxing boat ride on the crystal clear water surface in the evening the sun setting in a distance.
Surrounded by evergreen pine forests and acacia trees, Bejiram Lake is ideal for overnight camping and adventurous treks into the Palani hills. Two popular routes are to Manner and Kavunji, as these roads are closed for regular traffic and thus ideal for intrepid explorers. Kavunji is a shorter trek, just 9 kilometers (5.5 miles), while Manner is 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) away. You can also trek to Bejiram from either of these two villages. Though an exertion, the trek would be worth your while just to catch a glimpse of the breathtaking views that await at each step.
