Introduction

A kilometer-long pedestrian pathway carved out of the steep mountains, Coaker’s Walk overlooks the landscape on the southern side of Kodaikanal. First constructed in 1872, by a British officer, Lt. Coaker, this walkway offers some of the most breathtaking views and panoramic vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Situated about 500 meters from the bus stand, the Walk winds around Mt Nebo, starting from the front of Van Allen Hospital. Running parallel to it for a while, the Walk rejoins the main road near St Peter’s Church. But even this short distance is packed full of stunning views of the blue mountains covered in mist and lush green valleys.

You can reach the walkway by going through the botanical garden at Bryant Park. There is a nominal fee to get on the walkway but the exhilarating views more than make up for it. The walk is a photographer’s delight as the landscapes from here are resplendent with natural beauty. Along the walkway are alcoves set at short distances where you can sit and drink in the beauty of the valley while being buffeted with the strong breeze.

If the clouds should clear, the beauty of the valley below is truly wondrous. You can see distant sights like Dolphin's nose in south, Pambar river valley in the southeast, Periyakulam and Madurai.

Towards the end of the Walk is an observation tower with three telescopes. You can see precariously perched mountain villages and the aerial view of a famous residential school from the tower.

Croaker’s Walk is also the place to witness a very rare phenomenon. If the sun is to your back and your shadow falls on the clouds in front, surrounded by a halo on rainbow colors. This rare effect is called the Brochen Spectre. Only a lucky few visitors to Croaker’s Walk get to witness it.

This walk is open throughout the year and is a must do for all visitors to Kodaikanal.
