Introduction
For people interested in anthropology and paleontology Kodaikanal provides a very interesting attraction, Dolmen Circle. Located 18 kilometers (11 miles) from the Berijam lake, pre-historic remains dating as far back as 5000 BCE have been excavated from the site.
Dolmens are tripod like structures made of two very large erect stone slabs topped by a larger flat slab of stone. These prehistoric monuments mark the dwelling grounds of Neolithic people and date back to the Stone and Iron Ages. These sites provide a fascinating glimpse into the lifestyle of the prehistoric man. Though there is some speculation about the actual usage of these dolmens. While some experts believe them to be homes, others claim that the dolmens were used as storage areas for valuables. Several copper and brass utensils and ornaments have also been uncovered from the dolmens. Kistavens, marking the burial places of these people can also be found in this area.
Unfortunately, over the years a lot of this priceless heritage has been lost to the vagaries of nature and neglect. Now, only two dolmens remain in the Indian subcontinent. One of them is at the ghat road close to Periakulam, the other rests at a small distance from the small village at Pannaikadu.
The sight of such ancient remains, looking forlorn in the misty Palani hills is impressive. It offers a thrilling glimpse into the lives of our ancestors, preserved through the intervening centuries and is an awe-inspiring experience.
