Introduction

The Kodai Lake is the most prominent feature and tourist attraction in this scenic hill station. It forms the nerve centre of the town and a day in Kodaikanal feels incomplete without a trip to the lake for all tourists, and even most locals. This 24-hectare man made lake resembles a roughly drawn star, and is surrounded by 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) of paved promenade and a busy road that sees a steady stream of traffic.

Sir Vere Hendry Levinge is credited with the lead role in creation of the lake in 1863. Then the collector of Madurai, Sir Levinge planned to settle in Kodaikanal upon his retirement. At that time, the town was nothing more than a few missionary bungalows and outposts of British garrisons. A resourceful man and avid boating enthusiast, Sir Levinge dammed three of the larger streams that flowed into the valley to form the star-shaped lake. He also stocked this new lake with several species of local fish and even brought the town’s first boat all the way from Tuticorin.

A few years later, a group of colonial settlers formed a Boat Club at Kodai Lake, building a new boathouse in 1910. However, it was only in 1932 that the lake was open to the locals.

The vibrant hub of all tourist and commercial activity in Kodaikanal, there are many activities that invite visitors to the lake. You can stroll along the lake, just enjoying the views and cool breeze. Rent a paddle or row boat to hit the water yourself. The Kodaikanal Boat Club manages the renting and you can hire oarsmen to take you around or even try your own hand at it. Renting a boat normally costs between Rs 20 to Rs 200, depending on the kind of boat you hire. Back on land, you can hire a bicycle or even go horse riding round the lake.

The best time to visit Kodai Lake would be in early morning or just around sunset. At both times, the composition of a shimmering lake and verdant green hills creates a breathtaking scene, even the crowds are less at such times.

Several small shops and restaurants are sited within walking distance from the lake. You can stop by and get you fill of souvenirs, especially delicious cheese and homemade chocolates.
