Introduction

For those who don't feel that their vacation is complete without a round or two of golf, Kodaikanal boasts of an 18 hole golf course about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from the Kodai Lake, on the road to Pillar rocks. The course spreads over 150 acres and extends to a length of over 6,426 yards. It is a long hitting course with a par rating of 72.

It is a very scenic course, set over grasslands with a number of small streams running across the course. The elevated location of the course (7000 feet) provides excellent views of the surrounding valleys. In fact, thick green cover around the course has also led to reported instances of small wild life finding its way on to the greens and startling more one focused golfer.

The course was established in 1895 CE by twelve avid British golfers who also designed the course. Originally a nine-hole course, it was extended to its current full length in the 1950s.

There are a number of very interesting and challenging holes, aptly named after their special characteristics. In fact the sixth hole, Tiger hole, is so named so because sometimes tigers were sighted in the nearby jungle! Even now herds of wild boars can be sighted near this hole. The Devil's pit with its sharp dip to the pin and the 15th hole that needs two solid drives to reach the greens (587 yards) are two challenging holes that any golfer would love to play.

The club restricts entry to private members, but non-members can play the full 18 holes by becoming temporary members and paying the greens fees. However, non-members need to have a handicap or take lessons before playing on the course

The club also hosts over 50 tournaments through the year. The more famous ones are Palani Hill Open, Veday Cup, Rudrappan Memorial Cup, Contessa Open and the A V Thomas Tournament. A number of these tournaments are open to amateurs and you may want to test your skill against local champions.

In addition to the golf course, the club offers a designated practice area, driving range, conference rooms, cards room, billiards Room and a bar.
