Introduction
Kurinjiandavar Temple is a popular local shrine dedicated to Lord Murugan. Its name being an amalgamation of two Tamil words, ‘kurinji’ which means hilly region and ‘andavar’ which means God, the temple is quite literally named after Lord Murugan, the God of the Hills.
The temple also takes its name from the bright purple Kurinji flower that covers the adjacent hillside. It is said the flower blooms only once every 12 years, and each such year is an occasion of great joy for people living in the region. The Kurinji flowers last bloomed in 2004.
The shrine is popular among the locals who visit in a steady stream every day. The temple also organizes a special summer festival in the month of May, when thousands of locals throng to Kodai and seek Lord Murugan’s blessing.
It is said the temple was established by a local European woman who settled in the region and then converted to Hinduism. She changed her name to Leelavathi, sometimes also known as Lady Ramanathan and commissioned the construction of the temple in 1936. Currently, the temple is under the management of Arulmighu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Thiru Kovil, Palan.
Situated about 4 kilometers (2.4 miles), from the bus stand and Kodai Lake, for the more casual visitor to the area, the temple is a good place to get excellent views of the surrounding Palani hills and Vaigai Dam.
