Introduction

Located 8 kilometers (4.9 miles) from the town, Pillars Rocks is one of the most popular short excursions from Kodai town. A set of three gigantic boulders standing adjacent to each other, amidst a wooden glade, the Rocks are an awe-inspiring structure. Around 122 meters (400 feet) in height, the tops of the Rocks can be access after a short, steep trek up round the hillside. The dark, deep chambers between the rocks are inhabited by bats and perhaps aptly called Devil’s Kitchen. These ravines can be deceptively deep, and tourists would be well advised to be careful of where they step.

The locals often claim the rocks represent Lord Ganesha, as their form resembles the Lord’s own face. Locals even call the spot Pillayar, meaning Ganesha in the local language. The rocks are surrounded by lush green forests and often covered in cold mist that together creates an almost mystical appearance.

Visitors to the area can spend an afternoon trekking and exploring the surrounding hills, and close the day with a well-earned picnic lunch in the shade of the Pillar Rocks. You can also stop by at the small garden adjacent to the Rocks. It is well kept and when in bloom provides and interesting contrast to the dull grey of the rocks themselves.

The dramatic view and the scenic surroundings make Pillars Rocks a popular picnic spot among locals and tourists. The most easily accessible viewpoints are likely to be crowded at all times. However, there is a particular spot on the opposite cliff that offers a good view. The path up to the Pillars themselves is lined with tall trees and is a good choice for a leisurely trek; before settling down to a picnic in the Pillars’ own shadow.

Another notable feature of the Pillars Rocks is a cross that an English adventurer hoisted upon it. During the peak season, you can rent small telescopes or binoculars from the many hawkers who pack the site. They will easily point out the Cross Sign for you as well.
