Introduction
Shembaganur Museum of natural history, also known as the Flora & Fauna Museum, is dedicated to preserving the archeological remains of the flora and fauna of the hills. A Spanish priest, Father Ugarthe founded the Museum in 1895 CE. The Sacred Heart College now maintains and manages the Museum.
The Museum is renowned for its taxidermy collection: an astounding exhibit of more than 500 species of birds, animals, insects and butterflies. There is also an orchidorium, with over 300 different types of orchids. This rich repository is largely a result of the efforts of the students and professors of Sacred Heart College. Over the last 70 years, these science enthusiasts have worked tirelessly to preserve the animal and plant life of the region.
The result is a fascinating collection where you can see bright and exotic orchids as well as study the somber, preserved remains of ancient plants and animals.
Also housed in this museum are two large detailed paper-mache relief maps, which show the natural formations and geographical characteristics of Kodaikanal and the entire Palani range. The maps are a treat to examine as they show all the streams, roads, rock formations, waterfalls, lakes, forests, etc., of the entire region in great detail.
