Introduction

Situated on the side of a sweeping ghat road that connects Madurai and Kodaikanal is a tall shimmering curtain seemingly made of diamonds. Formed by the outflow of water from Kodai Lake, this dramatic waterfall is the Silver Cascade. The sight and sound of this waterfall brings a cheer in the hearts of travelers, as the pure sound of the waterfall silences the cacophony and chaos of traffic.

On the way from Dindigul or Madurai, as you climb up the hillside, watching the landscape change from the dryness of the lower hills to a richer green of evergreen, tropical forests, Silver Cascade is the first of Kodai’s landmarks that you will come upon. Located 8 kilometers (5 miles) from the main town, Silver Cascades is a sight that enthralls all first time visitors.

A picturesque waterfall, formed when the water leaps over a 55 meters (180 feet) high cliff face to crash thunderously into a lake, near a wide bend in the Ghat road, Silver Cascade regularly stops traffic. Especially during the peak summer seasons, when cars packed with happy families of vacation stop to admire the scene. Apart from the waters, there are a slew of monkeys that patrol the area forever looking for unattended food.

It is a fairly well known attraction and attracts a number of hawkers selling small souvenirs and food items, even the odd photographer pestering you for a paid picture.

A word of caution, though the falls looks beautiful and inviting, the water quality is very poor and it is unadvisable to bathe here. Also the boulders are slippery and jut out sharply at times. If you must venture in, take your time and judge each slippery rock as you step along. You can step just below the bride, where a smaller but more peaceful waterfall is present.
