Introduction
Close to the Lighthouse beach is a memorial dedicated to the two ancient Kovalam poets Ayyanappilla Asan and Ayyippilla Asan. They were the authors of the great regional epics Janakeeya Maha Kaviangal, Ramakatha Pattu and Bharathampattu, who spent their lives in Kovalam near the Lighthouse beach, Avaduthura in 1400 AD. Today the monument is under the Kerala Government Archaeological Department. The memorials get a lot of visitors.
The beach is named after the Vizhinjam lighthouse that dominates the rocky promontory, and continues to glow in the darkness of the night at regular intervals. Unfortunately, visitors are not allowed to scale up the structure to take in a panoramic view of the coastline. This long sandy strip has many life guards patrolling its length. The other side of the beach is paved and illuminated, and is lined with some decent eateries doing an array of seafood, traditional Kerala specialties and snacks. It is very easy to approach this prominent Kovalam beach from Trivandrum city centre as there a number of transport options.
